Wendy's Flexes New Vegetarian Spicy Black Bean Burger

Wendy's recently announced a new vegetarian option to is menu: the Spicy Black Bean Burger. Instead of including some sort of faux meat or patty to evoke the real taste of beef or chicken, the fast food mainstay is opting for a burger with two types of protein instead: black beans and chickpeas.

John Li, Vice President of Culinary Innovation at Wendy's, explained in a press event that the certified vegetarian Spicy Black Bean Burger has been in the works for quite some time to make it perfect: "Just because something is meatless doesn’t mean it needs to be tasteless," he said. "With our Spicy Black Bean Burger, we crafted it to feature texture, flavor, and a nutrition profile we were looking for."

The Spicy Black Bean Burger's patty -- in Wendy's signature square shape -- is made with a combination of black beans, chickpeas and spices. It will also come complete with chipotle jalapeños for texture, melty pepper jack, spicy chipotle sauce, tomatoes, sweet onion slices and romaine all inside a toasted bun.

The burger is said to pack less heat than Wendy's spicy nuggets or spicy chicken sandwiches. It will be available starting June 28 in select test markets in Columbus, Ohio; Jacksonville, Florida; and Pittsburgh. Head to Wendy's website for more information.
