'Magic: Legends' RPG Is Being Shut Down After Just Four Months of Open Beta

Cryptic Studios has announced that the much-anticipated Magic: Legends action roleplaying game will be shutting down this October.

The game originally launched its open beta phase earlier in March exclusively for PC via the Epic Games Store, but initial mixed reception and subsequent negative reviews have led the team to now completely abandon the project.

“Our vision for Magic: Legends missed the mark, but we are proud of what we achieved,” wrote the game's executive producer Steve Ricossa in a statement to fans. “Thanks to Wizards of the Coast, we got to bring the expansive Magic: The Gathering Multiverse to a wide audience and explore new angles within the established ARPG genre. We learned several valuable lessons along the way, and we will use them to improve Cryptic’s future development efforts.”

The announcement also reassures players that any money they've spent during the open beta will be fully refunded to them, and any purchases will now be shifted over the Aether currency, which you can earn for free in the game itself. Those who wish to continue playing will also be able to do so until October 31 when the game officially shuts down, although it will remain purely for PC as an Epic Games Store exclusive.

In other gaming news, GTA VI could be arriving in 2024 or 2025.
