Fans of Grand Theft Auto might have to wait a little while longer for GTA VI, with video game industry insider Tom Henderson noting that Rockstar Games will most likely not release the followup title until 2024 or 2025.
Henderson, who has proven to be a mostly trustworthy source, uploaded a YouTube video sharing the knowledge he has on the highly-anticipated game. The insider stated that he initially assumed that GTA VI could release in 2023 or 2024, but pushed back his estimate under the belief that Rockstar is refocusing its efforts and energy on the wellbeing of its staff following "intense crunch" on its previous titles. He added Rockstar will not announce the game until they are sure of a release date, and will not delay the game after its announcement (both GTA IV and GTA V were delayed). There's also the matter of the supply shortage of next-gen consoles like the PlayStation 5, Microsoft Xbox Series X/S, which could be a problem until mid-2022. As such, the studio might want to take advantage of a regular supply of next-gen consoles so they can announce the game to a bigger audience.
The rumors arrive about half a year after Henderson claimed that GTA VI will feature a female protagonist — a first in the franchise. If the release year rumors are true, GTA VI will be released 11 or 12 years after its predecessors. For comparison, Rockstar took five years between GTA IV and V and four years between GTA IV and San Andreas.
Elsewhere in gaming, Loki is joining Fortnite in July.
