Phil Mickelson has just become the oldest golfer in history to win a major championship. Just weeks away from turning 51, Lefty came out on top finishing with a six-under-par over Louis Oosthuizen (-4) and Brooks Koepka (-4).
The last time Mickelson held the Wanamaker trophy was back in 2005, but most impressive about this win is that he now joins an exclusive club of four players in PGA history that have won a major in four different decades, and is now the 14th man to win at least six major championships.
Going into the PGA Championship, Mickelson's pre-tournament odds were +28,000 vs. Koepka's +4,500, and against all odds, held a high position throughout the tournament. Things looked good early on as he gained tremendous confidence in the fifth hole where he chipped in from a waste bunker for an unreal birdie.
Mickelson commented in his winning speech, "This is just an incredible feeling because I just believed that it was possible but yet everything was saying it wasn't. I hope that others might find that inspiration, it might take a little extra work and a little hard effort to maintain physically or maintain the skills but gosh is it worth it in the end."
