The long-awaited Saturday Night Live debut of EV-mogul Elon Musk is set to be available internationally via YouTube livestream for the first time in the history of the show.
Tonight's broadcast SNL features Miley Cyrus as a musical guest, which is the network's attempt at broadening its audience beyond the U.S. market. NBCU's chairman Frances Berwick said, "SNL is a global phenomenon and this livestream marks the first time audiences around the world will experience the show simultaneously along with the U.S. It’s incredibly exciting to create this worldwide event with host Elon Musk and musical guest Miley Cyrus. We thank our international partners and YouTube for helping us make it happen."
Since late-night TV audiences tend to watch shows later, TV networks have begun experimenting with different ways of distributing programs. It is unclear whether or not the livestream will be supported by advertising, which is one of the many reasons NBC's plan to stream new episodes of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and Late Night With Seth Meyer on Peacock prior to its TV broadcast.
It remains to be seen whether or not SNL will continue livestream any of its future episodes.
