Engineered Garments' African-Inspired SS22 Collection Delivers Important Message for the Future

For Engineered Garments' latest Spring/Summer 2022 collection, founder Daiku Suzuki drew inspiration from '80's fashion and pop culture with a primary focus on African cultures. The lookbook is titled "The First and the Future," which reflects the Japanese designer's motive to remind future generations of the need to restore ecosystems worldwide.

With a mission to lead audiences back to the roots of wilderness, the season's colors are inspired by imageries of Africa, including desert khaki, sky blue, and savanna green. Further emphasizing the theme of biodiversity are fabrics featuring exotic motifs such as an African leaf print, animal print, and leopard print. Other influences include fashion brands that have interpreted animal prints in the '80s, such as Ralph Lauren and the Banana Republic, and musicians including Paul Simon, Toto and the like.

Leading the lineup is the Bedford Jacket in khaki made with animal print cotton flat twill. Other distinctive pieces include the jacquard Upland Vest in bright multi-color, the Racing Suit in khaki and olive leaf prints, and the Bucket Hat available in various materials from cotton jacquard to poly fiber.

Priced at ¥14,300 JPY (approximately $125 USD) to ¥50,600 JPY (approximately $440 USD), wholesale profits from the stuffed animals featured throughout the looks will be donated to help make clean water wells in Africa.
