'Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier' Arrives as a Battle Royale Mobile Game

Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier, a free-to-play battle royale combat game for mobile designed by Tetsuya Nomura from Square Enix, has been released globally, generating over one million downloads in just two days following its debut.

The new Final Fantasy game is set in Midgar three decades before the events of Final Fantasy VII,  back in the beginnings of the Shinra Corporation's SOLDIER program, so the show's recognizable characters won't be available. Instead, players load in as recruits looking to become the first Soldier. 75 augmented soldiers are dropped into an expansive map and players can play solo or in teams of three. A variety of guns, potions, rare summon spells, and other "materia" can be found across the map, and players can choose between Warrior, Monk, Ninja, and Sorcerer job roles which decide different special abilities. A chocobo minigame is also included, and players can summon their customizable chocobos in battle as a speedy transport option, an alternative to the cars and bikes which are also featured in-game. Like with most free-to-play mobile games players can make in-game purchases for Shinra Credits which can be exchanged for season passes, loot boxes, skins, and accessories.

Having been released for just over a week, the initial reception for the game has garnered mixed reviews with some saying the game would have been better if released on console, and others obsessed with the new release. The main issue stated by players is the cluttered interface and difficult controls. As it's still early, time will tell whether the developers are able to fix the initial issues in the upcoming patches.

Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier is now available for iOS and Android devices.

In other gaming news, players are already cheating with aimbot and wallhack on Halo Infinite.
