The 2022 Subaru WRX Combines Its Rally-Bred Underpinnings With New Tech and Luxury

The 2022 Subaru WRX is here and it's coming to a stateside dealer near you soon. Following on from the hugely successful iteration that launched back in 2015, the fifth-generation model maintains its rally-bred underpinnings but combines this with a new sense of purpose, making it a car that's more refined than the previous generation but by no means is it a slump.

Powering the 2022 iteration is a 2.4-liter turbocharged BOXER engine that's mated to either -- and thankfully -- a six-speed manual with optimized gear ratios, or an automatic Subaru Performance Transmission "which offers up to 30% faster upshifts (2nd to 3rd) and 50% faster downshifts (3rd to 2nd)," and also features "adaptive shift control that can quickly respond to perform rev-matching downshifts under braking."

All in all, the engine now produces 271 HP and 258 lb-ft of torque, which when fitted with the top-of-the-line GT trim, will be met with electronically controlled dampers offering modes from comfort to normal and sport. There are 430 different configurable settings spanning all different elements of the car, but most will alter the steering feel, damper settings, and SI-Drive settings.

Elsewhere, a new track-tuned suspension can be found underneath the car that aims to further engage the driver in a more visceral experience, while stopping power comes courtesy of four-wheel ventilated disc brakes, situated behind 17" or optional 18" rims.

Visually, you'll find a familiarly boxy and wide body that's been updated with a new set of LED headlights and a wider hood scoop to accompany the hexagonal grille, while at the rear you'll find an integrated spoiler and tail lights that are meant to mimic volcanic magma.

Inside, there's a host of contemporary updates ranging from a tablet-style 11.6" full HD center information display to parking sensor and camera functions, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, an 11-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, and new safety tech.

The 2022 Subaru WRX is set to land Stateside in early 2022. Take a closer look at the reborn icon above, and stay tuned to HYPEBEAST and HYPEBEAST Car Club for more information on whether we'll see an STI iteration soon.

Elsewhere in the automotive world, HYPEBEAST has dropped its latest iteration of DRIVERS.
