Backstage at Thom Browne's SS22 Show

Thom Browne's Spring/Summer 2022 show was more than just a standard runway presentation — it was a grand nod to American fashion underscored by masterful tailoring and intertwined with the whimsical elements of a theatrical production.

The show first centered on two enchanted bachelors trapped inside a large wooden house, looking out onto a vast garden while horse-headed figures riding penny-farthings lapped the premise. From there, the imprint's latest works entered the scene — Browne's signature approach to suiting claimed prominence among the range, while androgynous pencil skirts and trompe l'oeil-draped dresses with several layers of tulle reminded onlookers of the imprint's commitment to boundary-pushing constructions.

Ahead of the presentation, models transformed into Browne's garden-traversing characters backstage, some boasting intricate flower-inspired makeup looks with floral headdresses and others fronting geometric strips of beige makeup resembling cracked Earth. And while Browne's classic design codes spoke for themselves, each hair and makeup look was responsible for transporting the plethora of mannequins into the designer's runway fairytale. As backstage transformations took place, the front row filled itself with some of pop culture's buzzy names, including Russell Westbrook, Dan Levy, Troye Sivan, Jeremy O. Harris and Lil Huddy, before a silence rang across the room at the presentation's commencement.
