Idris Elba is officially joining the cast of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 as the voice of Knuckles the Echidna.
The English actor took to Twitter to confirm the news, posting a photo of Knuckles' hand and the caption, "Knock, knock.... #SonicMovie2 #Knuckles." Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will reportedly see Knuckles team up with Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) as they "search for an emerald that has the power to both build and destroy civilizations," so Sonic (Ben Schwartz) and Tails must stop the pair while Tom (James Marsden) and Maddie (Tika Sumpter) are away on vacation.
Elba's casting arrives just shortly after the premiere of the highly-anticipated James Gunn and Warner Bros. film The Suicide Squad, where he portrayed the role of Robert DuBois/Bloodsport. Despite initially receiving a 100 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes (currently at 91 percent), the movie opened with only $26.5 million USD in the box office.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is set to hit theaters on April 8, 2022.
