The 'Pokémon Unite' Trailer Shows Fun and Frentic Team-Based Battle Gameplay

In the madness of E3 this last week, one title that surely stood out to Pokémon fans was Pokémon Unite, the franchise's first-ever strategic team battle game. Debuting for the Nintendo Switch this summer, then arriving to Android and iOS devices in the fall, Pokémon Unite offers League of Legends-like 5-on-5 action in which players aim to eliminate members of the opposing team and ultimately capture their "base."

The recently-released trailer for Pokémon Unite shows a stylized version of its fun, frenetic gameplay and spotlights familiar faces like Pikachu, Snorlax, Mr. Mime and Lucario — duking it out for supremacy in a luscious island arena. All the game's battles are timed, and each Pokémon in the game has its own signature "Unite" move, though there are no type advantages.

“During these battles, players will cooperate with teammates to catch wild Pokémon, level up and evolve their own Pokémon," says an official game description. "They will need to defeat their opponents’ Pokémon while trying to earn more points than the opposing team within the allotted time.”

Pokémon Unite was developed by Tencent Games' TiMi Studio group, and is free to play with in-app purchases. It's also cross-platform compatible, so Android and iOS users will be able to compete with Switch owners when the game expands to mobile later this fall.

See the trailer above, and when you're done watching be sure to pour one out for Grand Theft Auto V's PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 online play — which will come to an end on December 16.
