Study Reveals There Is "No Safe Dose" of Alcohol for Brain Health

According to a new study in the United Kingdom, consuming any amount of alcohol can have negative effects on the brain.

Investigating the concept of "safe alcohol consumption levels," the study was put together to explore the correlation between moderate alcohol consumption and brain health. Researchers looked to determine the threshold of intake and reveal the levels of risk associated with drinking.

Analyzing data from 25,000 participants that self-reported alcohol consumption levels and memory tests, the study shows that there is "no safe dose of alcohol for the brain." With moderate alcohol consumption showing adverse effects on the brain with the severity of the effects greatly increased in binge drinkers. Aside from lower grey matter density in the brain, the integrity of white matter is also comprised, while accompanying blood pressure levels and negative body mass index aspirating the issues.

The conclusion from the authors of the study is that drinking guidelines promoted worldwide need to be revisited. Currently, the CDC's Dietary Guidelines recommends that adults should limit their daily intake to two standard drinks for men and one or fewer standard drinks for women.
